Chiesa di S. Francesco:
It is a remarkable Romanesque construction of the year 1000
approx., with an elegant Cosmatesque portal of the 12th century.
The interior of three aisles offer the sepulchral monument
of Briobis by Paolo di Gualdo Cattaneo, called Paolo Romano
of the early 15th century, a marble tabernacle of the 15th
century and frescoes of various periods. The crypt of six
aisles and three apses has been entirely excavated of the
tuff.
The Museo della Cittą e
del Territorio offers exhibitions dedicated to the historical
centres and the traditional handicrafts of the Tuscia and
a promotion centre of universitary research and safeguard
of the local cultivations.
In 1206, Innocent III donated
to the town of Vetralla a vast extension of woods on Monte
Fogliano, claimed as well by the city of Viterbo. From this
event originates the annual feast of the Sposalizio dell'albero
(marriage of th tree), during which the Mayor of Vetralla
reaffirms its rights of possession on Monte Fogliano.
