After
the destruction of Castro in 1649, Valentano became momentarily
the administrative capital of the Duchy of Castro. The important
interventions in the historical centre and the further modifications
of the Rocca Farnese, rebuilt and enlarged since the
early 16th century on the remains of a pre-existing medieval
castle, belong to this period. In 1730 it became a monastery,
while today it houses the Museo della Rocca Farnese
with its medieval and Renaissance pottery and the Museo
della Preistoria della Tuscia with exhibits dating from
the Palaeolithic to the Iron Age coming from the area of the
valley of the Fiora river and from the palafitte settlements
in the Lago di Mezzano.
