In an impervious area, covered
with thick vegetation and crossed by the river Treja , a part
of about 1000 hectares , partly in the territory of Calcata,
has been declared protected area. Many animal species live
here: foxes, badgers, porcuspines, weasels, woodpeckers and
jays, while prey birds like kites, kestrels and buzzards prefer
the surrounding glades. The night-birds present are barn-owls,
horned owls and sparrow owls. Leaving Calcata and after having
passed Mazzano Romano by 4 km, turning to the left, you get
to an impressive naturalistic area, run by the river and surrounded
by luxuriant vegetation, with the ruins of an ancient mill
and medieval towers.
