The
territory is located between the Cimini Mountains, over 900
m high with oceanic climate, and the Tolfa Mountains, just
about 600 m high with mediterranean climate. The morphology
of the area changes continously: from the deep gorges of the
valleys, covered with thick vegetation, to the bare and arid
heights. Thanks to the big quantity of natural habitats, many
permanent and migratory birds live here. Among the birds of
prey you may easily watch: buzzards, kestrels, kites and peregrines,
while since several years has disappeared the "capovaccaio"
(perenopterus), a vulture aerieing in the rocky faces of the
canyons; among the night-birds: owls, horned owls and the
rare eagle-owl. To witness for the intact environment, there
is the presence of the wild cat. Among the Mammalia : foxes,
stone-martens, weasels and wild boars. The south-western part
of the parc is reserved as grazing ground for wild Maremma
cattle and horses, being this area of poor vegetation. In
the valleys, instead, vegetation is particularly luxuriant,
thanks to the delicate micro-climate, which allows the growth
of various plants, such as wild orchids and endemic species
of ferns.
Furthermore,
inside the parc there is the Necropoli
Etrusca di San Giuliano, at 2 km distance from Barbarano
Romano, with tombs from the 6th to the 5th century BC; remarkable
the tumuli Cima, Rosi, of the Deer and of the Queen. (Informations
at the Visitors' Centre in Barbarano Romano, Tel. 0761/414507).
In Barbarano Romano, in the former church of S. Angelo, has
been set up the Museo, which contains the archeological remains
from the Villanova period to the 3rd century.
