Regional public transport consortium of Latium

laziometr.jpg (7162 byte) Displacements within, from and to the province of Viterbo happen in the context of the regional metrebus system. Since 1994 the metrebus association unites in one only integrated area-fare system some transport companies operating in the Region of Latium, such as the Ferrovie dello Stato (Regional Direction of Latium for local transport), COTRAL and ATAC. This enables you to move within the region with one ticket only.

The Latium region has been divided up into seven concentric zones. Each municipality with its outskirts is included in one zone only. The different zones are identified by the letters A B C D E F. There are only six letters because A stands for Rome which, on account of its size and complexity, counts as two zones. With an integrated ticket you can use Cotral, FS (State Railway) and Atac public transport, on road and on rail, throughout the region, except for some special services. The price of the ticket is determined by the number of zones crossed and not by the lenght of the journey or the quantity of transport means employed. The number on the ticket indicates how many zones have been acquired.

Integrated tickets are valid for all routes that begin and end inside the Latium region. If two or more locations within the same zone are linked by routes passing through other zones on their way, the fare is calculated according to the number of zones crossed.

*Attention: The integrated regional daily tickets (B.I.R.G.) are of main interest for the tourists in Viterbo: who wishes to visit Rome, at the cost of 13.000 Lire (equal to five zones: Rome alone takes two) may use the trains of the Ferrovie Statali and CO.TRA.L. trains and buses plus all urban transport means of ATAC and the underground in Rome.

Where to buy tickets and season tickets

All FS, Cotral and Atac ticket counters and at authorized points of sale:

At more than 4000 tobacconists, newspapers sales, stationeries, bars, travel agencies in Rome and Latium;

in Rome, at 364 automatic dispenders (Meb) placed in town at the main ATAC termini and in the station of the underground;

at the ticket counters of the stations Anagnina, Lepanto, Flaminio, Eur Fermi, Ponte Mammolo (weekly, monthly, yearly tickets);

at the FS ticket counters in the stations of Rome and Latium;

for owners of bank accounts at the 600 counters of the authorised banks (for yearly season tickets only).

General Transport Regulations

The passengers are bound to respect the written or verbal instructions as to the access and the use of the transport means and the plants.
In order to use the COTRAL services passengers have to be in possession of a ticket recognised as valid by the companies.
The possession of the ticket is as well compulsary for the luggage exceeding the free luggage and for the animals admitted on fare.

Children:

smaller than 1 metre or not older than 4 years of age travel without fare if accompanied by an adult (not more than one per paying adult)

Animals:

Dogs

Have to wear a muzzle and be kept by the leash;
during transport have to be kept in a way not causing trouble or harm to persons and goods, shall not obstruct passways and doors;
No more than two dogs are allowed on the same coach;

Admitted to transport are:

without fare: blind’s dogs;
at ordinary fare: small and medium sized dogs;

Cats and birds (with fare)

Transport is allowed in a cage or a basket not exceeding 25x45x80 cm.
Cages and basket shall be kept in away not causing trouble or harm to persons and goods.

Passengers accompanying animals are bound to pay compensation for damages caused to the coach, to goods or to other passengers.

Luggage:

each passenger is allowed to transport free one piece of luggagge not exceeding 50x30x25 cm.

N.B. Transport of animals and of luggage may be restricted or refused by company staff according to service necessities.

Proper use of tickets:

Entitled tickets must be filled in by the passenger before use.
Tickets bound to be invalidated have to be marked at the beginning of the trip on or off-board.
Passengers are bound to check the exactness of the date and the hour of the marking.
The missing or wrong functioning of a marking machine has to be reported immediately to company staff of the station or to the bus-driver; in the latter case the passenger will have to write the number of the coach on his ticket.
The ticket must be kept as long as you are on the means or within the stations and must be exhibited to controlling staff.

Fines:

Whoever is found without a ticket (for him, for animals or exceeding luggage) or with an irregular ticket will be fined with ITL 100000 (art.1 of regional law 13.01.98 n.3) plus the fare (from departure terminal to arrival terminal in case of overland buses and trains).

A passenger is considered to be without a ticket if:

although holding a ticket, he did not invalidate the same;
he exhibits a ticket or a season ticket with evident signs of alteration or falsification;
he uses a ticket beyond the time or period of validity;
he uses an ordinary ticket on routes requiring a special ticket;
he uses a ticket of lower value than required;
he exhibits a reduced season ticket without the necessary accompanying documents;
he exhibits an entitled ticket which has not been properly filled or which is not accompanied by an identification card;
he exhibits a ticket out of course.

How to pay the fine:

Directly to the controller. If not by cash, according to the regulations written on the back of the fine-sheet:

the trespasser has the right, within 30 days from reception or notification of the fine, to address a letter in defense to the Direction of Cotral, Via Volturno, 65 - 00185 Roma, by means of a registered letter or handed over personally;
the trespasser may pay the fine within 60 days from reception or notification plus the cost of the notification by means of a postal paying form annexed to the fine;
the 60 days being elapsed, the fine report will be sent to the competent commune (where the fine has been raised), whose mayor has the power of issuing an injunctive order which may multiply the original debt by 1 to 5 times
