Lago di Bolsena

<< BACK

The lake occupies a crater of the Volsini mountains with a surface of 144 sq. km., 43 km. of perimeter and a depth of 146 m. It is the fifth largest lake in Italy and the largest in Europe of those of vulcanic origin. Besides Bolsena, the villages of Marta and Capodimonte face the lake. There are two islands in the fishy lake, the Bisentina and the Martana. The first offers a habitat of rare naturalistic interest with in between artistic elements, such as 16th century chapels of the Farnese period and an ancient abbey, today equipped for cultural events and restauration. Being a private property, the island can be visited in the summer season, using the boats with departure from the small ports of Bolsena and Capodimonte. The Martana island, private property as well, is recalled for the tragic death of Amalasunta, daughter of Theoderic and Queen of the Ostrogotes , who, according to the legend, had been murdered in this secluded place by order of her husband and cousin Theodatus.
