The
Palazzo Farnese, built on project of Vignola in the
16th century on the account of Cardinal Alessandro Farnese,
nephew of Paul III, is probably the greatest Late Renaissance
work ever realized. The frescoes of the rooms represent the
top of the Italian painting of the 70ies and 80ies of the
16th century.
Remarkable,
the helicoidal staircase by Vignola which leads to the first
floor and the frescoes of the Zuccari brothers: the Chapel
and the rooms of The Splendour of the Farnese and of the Council
of Trent. The garden with its monumental fountains ends on
a plateau surrounded by 28 caryatides with a gigantic fountain
in front of an elegant villa.
In
the imposing church of S. Teresa del Carmelo with its
annexed convent built in the 17th century on a project of
Rainaldi, is conserved, among other works, a painting ascribed
to Guido Reni, the "Madonna del Carmine".
