The
Parco dei Mostri (Monster Park) in the Bosco Sacro,
the work which made Bomarzo famous in the world, dates back
to the 16th century, when Vicino Orsini, born here in 1523,
created it in net contrast with the artistic laws and tastes
of the period, disseminating the park with fantastical and
extravagant, even exaggerated sculptures, anticipating by
much the Baroque period.
Uphill,
on top of the ancient Borgo (the centre) stands the
Palazzo Orsini, build by Vicino Orsini in the 16th
century on a pre-existent feudal manor, later modified by
Ippolito Lante della Rovere and others. It contains the Counsel
Hall with a vault frescoed by Antonangelo Bonifazi, from where
you have a magnificent view on the Park and on the Tiber valley.
It is also a museum with a collection of more than 100 modern
sculptures dating back from 1960 to nowadays.
Crossing
the Borgo, you reach the Duomo, partially rebuilt in
the 16th century on the original medieval church, with its
beautiful clock-tower which rests on Etruscan blocks. Inside
there are some Florentine style frescoes of the 16th century
and a Longobard sarcophagus.
