The
Castello Monaldeschi dominates the medieval quarter,
the Upper town of Bolsena. The square castle with its
corner towers is an old construction of the 12th century,
which has been completely renovated and now houses the Museo
Territoriale. The museum contains a lapidarium, historical
hints on the vulcanic activities of the area, a prehistoric
and an Etruscan section, a documentation of the ancient town
of Volsinii, which can be visited at approx. 1,5 km from town
on the road to Orvieto at Poggio Moscini, the Dionysian
throne of the 2nd century BC, the history of the castle and
various medieval remains.
The Palazzo
del Drago is an elegant Renaissance building, just underneath
the castle, remarkable because of the Tuscan characteristics
of its architecture and for a cycle of frescoes of the Roman
Mannerism preceding the Zuccaris' one. (Can be visited on
request addressed to the Prince Del Drago). <<

The
Collegiata di S. Cristina is composed by four contiguous
churches, of which the middle one of S. Cristina dates back
to the 11th century. The interior offers an exciting scenery:
altars, niches, chapels, paintings, frescoes and sculptures
of rare historical interest. In the Chapel of the Miracle
are venerated three of the famous stones, stained by the blood
of the Miracle of the Eucharist of 1263, which has been subsequently
consecrated by Urban V by creating the Corpus Christi Day
and by the construction of the famous Cathedral of Orvieto.
The cave created by cutting the catacombes in the 4th century
conserves the altar with the stone which, according to the
legend, supported
the body of S. Cristina thrown in the Lago di Bolsena. From
here you acceed to the Catacombes, the remains of which
are shown in an antiquarium in the Chapel of S. Leonardo,
and to the tomb of Saint Christine. <<

Being famus all over the world
because of the two religious events which happened in town,
among the manifestations emerge the Infiorata con Processione,
held on Corpus Christi Day, and the commemoration of the Misteri
di S. Cristina, the saint martyrized in Bolsena. Following
the feast of S. Cristina, the manifestation Musica
e Teatro with concerts at the Castello Monaldeschi and
theatre performances at the Foro Romano takes place. There
is to mention as well the International Tuscia Award (literature)
and the Premio Ambiente Cittą di Bolsena (environment
award). <<
