The town of Viterbo lies in the
middle of the Italian peninsula, in the region of Latium, and is the capital of the
province of the same name. It probably occupies the location of the ancient Etruscan village of Surrena which in Roman times changed its name to Vicus Elbii. In the 8th century , now known as Castrum Viterbii, it was occupied by the Longobards and later became the seat of the Popes (1257-1281) passing a favourable period of town development. Today nearly 60000 residents live on an area of approx. 407 sq.km. Thanks to its geographic location, Viterbo is easy to reach and
