In
964, the Emperor Otto I stayed a long time in Acquapentente,
where he signed many peace treaties. When Castro, the capital
of the Duchy of Castro, had been destroyed by Innocent X,
the episcopal seat was transferred to Acquapendente. Inside
the Cattedrale del Santo Sepolcro, built in the 11th-12th
century, but later modified in Baroque style, there is an
amazing crypt (Cripta) of the 10th century of nine
aisles, supported by 22 stone columns with rich capitals,
built on a previous chapel of the same size than that of the
Holy Sepulchre.
Acquapendente
is famous for the Festa dei Pugnaloni, great and spectacular
pictures composed of flowers, mosses, herbs and lychens, which
after having been transported through the streets of the town
are exhibited in the cathedral. This is how the liberation,
with the help of the Pontifical Army, from Frederic I Barbarossa
is commemorated; being formerly a popular political demonstration
characterized by a great hatred towards the foreigners(at
that time at least), during his passage through Italy Napoleon
wanted to forbid it.
In the Riserva
Naturale di Monte Rufeno, at the Casale Giardino, at 5 km
from town, is housed the Museo del Fiore, the only
naturalist museum in the whole province.
